Did you know that Rutherford County is home to one of only FOUR willow casket makers in the whole United States? Willow caskets are becoming a popular option for those individuals seeking a "green" burial alternative to conventional vaults and caskets.
Moss and Thistle Casket Company serves the greater Asheville region with their handcrafted willow caskets. They work closely with the Mills River Burial Sanctuary to provide a simple, affordable, and beautiful option for individuals looking for a green burial vessel. So far this year, their business has more than doubled its production from last year - and it's only July!
One of the major constraints that Moss and Thistle Casket Company has faced is the supply of the willow itself. To combat this, they planted their own field of willow and was awarded a grant from NC Ag Options to research the economic and agricultural potential of willow in our region.
