Governor Perdue Establishes Innovation Council

Gov. Perdue on Nov. 16 announced the creation of the first N.C. Innovation Council. The purpose of the Council is to foster strategic investments and policies in the growing knowledge and innovation economy. Perdue made the announcement after touring a lab at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem.

"To continue growing jobs in North Carolina, we must make sure this state is poised to compete globally in the 21st century," said Perdue. "Innovation is North Carolina's launch pad to success in the global economy, and it's a primary way for us to maintain and sharpen our competitive edge." Read more.

Executive Order No. 29 establishes the N.C. Innovation Council and empowers it to advise the governor on:
  • Coordinating public and private investments and policies to promote innovation
  • Moving innovative ideas from the lab to the marketplace more efficiently
  • Strengthening collaboration among business, academia, state and local government

"Tom's of Maine" choose Rutherford Housing Partnership for $20,000 grant.

After weeks of public voting for 50 "inspiring and creative" non-profits, Tom's of Maine, maker of natural personal care products such as toothpaste, soap and deodorant, has named the five top vote-getters in its "50 States for Good" initiative.

Tom's says the program, which rewards non-profits that make a lasting difference in their community, drew more than 280,000 online votes. The five top vote-getters will each receive $20,000.

One of the recipients was Rutherford Housing Partnership for Project Access.  Project Access is a ramp-building project to provide handicap access to 15 to 20 low-income homeowners in the county who cannot now safely access their homes.

Thank you to all who helped vote online for this project.  Our community will greatly benefit from this initiative.

"As most of you know Carpenter Design, Inc. suffered a devastating fire on July 1st. We have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpour of support, prayer and encouragement from so many people in our county and beyond.  It certainly has been challenging to continue operations following this tragedy. However, we are encouraged by the recovery of our injured employee, Billy Tessenair, who continues to make good progress. He still has a long road to a full recovery and needs our continued prayers, but we give thanks to God for Billy’s improvement and for his optimistic spirit.

In the wake of such a loss, we still have much to be thankful for. Our entire pallet recycling plant was destroyed by the fire, but our mulch coloring facilities were basically unharmed and have kept production on schedule. Thanks to the help of several friends, we were able to operate the pallet business out of two separate locations in the county and keep deliveries ongoing.

With the acquisition of the Hanesbrand plant on Main St., Forest City, our pallet operation is fully functional. This facility gives us room to expand our recycling efforts as well as the possibility to attract new businesses that require warehouse and distribution facilities.

We have also received a rural development matching fund grant based on job creation that can be used to upgrade the building. We must now press forward to create new jobs, be more efficient in existing ones, and work hard to make the most of our new opportunities."
