Complete Count Committee Underway

As the 2010 Census approaches, the county has been asked to form a publicity committee in order to ensure every person in Rutherford County is counted.  In order to accomplish this, we are putting together a diverse group to help with the effort.  Your organization comes into contact with a great deal of citizens on a daily basis and could be an asset in spreading our message.  If you are interested in participating on this committee, please contact Kerry Giles at 248.1716.

The Complete Count Committee will include representatives from the following sectors:  Government, Education, Faith-Based, Media, Community-Based and Business.  We have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, September 22nd from 8:30-11:30 am.  At this time, the regional representative with the US Census Bureau will speak to us on our role and them we will break into groups to brainstorm ideas for spreading our message.  We do not anticipate this committee requiring a great deal of your time and will last for approximately 6-8 months.  This committee will also not be responsible for the actual collection of census data.

The more informed residents are about the 2010 Census operations, the better their understanding of the census process becomes, thus increasing their willingness to be a part of the successful enumeration in 2010.  From the side of Economic Development, we use these numbers constantly in our efforts to bring and retain jobs in the county.  If our census numbers are not accurate, we have the potential of being at a disadvantage for the next ten years.  Please join us in this publicity campaign so we can have great participation from all residents of Rutherford County.

VA Clinic Hosts Town Hall Meeting

Veterans living in or near Rutherford, Cleveland and Polk counties will have an opportunity to hear first-hand on Tuesday about the new Veterans health clinic now under construction in Rutherfordton.

Officials from the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville have scheduled a Town Hall Meeting for area Veterans from 6:30 -- 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, in The Foundation Performing Arts & Conference Center at Isothermal Community College in Spindale.

VA officials will provide details about the new Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), discuss the types of primary health care services that will be available, and provide area Veterans an opportunity to meet officials from the VA Medical Center. There will also be a question-and-answer session.

The VA’s new CBOC will be located in Rutherfordton in the Rutherford Square Shopping Center at 374 Charlotte Road adjacent to the old Food Lion location. Plans call for the new clinic to be open later this fall. Enhancing access to care by locating outpatient health clinics in communities closer to where Veterans live and work is one of the key goals of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
